They love the energy it gives them and stamina to take on incredible workouts during their cleanses. Guests always ask me, “How did you turn me into this superhuman workout machine?” I have instinctively answered, “Spirulina,” but not quite knowing why I knew spirulina was power behind our customers’ workout feats. I have now done more research on this superfood, and will share some of the science behind the power of spirulina.

A January 2010 research study published in Medicine and Science in Sports and Exercise reported that spirulina had a very positive effect on exercise and sports performance. The study showed that the time to fatigue after the two hour run was significantly longer among the men who took spirulina during the study. The carbohydrate oxidation rate was decreased by over 10% and the fat-burning rate was increased by almost 11% over the placebo group. The study concluded that spirulina really does enhance exercise performance. Spirulina will power your workouts while you are cleansing, and the protein will help you build muscle during your detox. Spirulina contains a high amount of protein, vitamins, and minerals. It is about 60-70% protein, which is greater gram for gram than both red meat and soy. It also contains all of the essential amino acids, which makes it a complete protein. It contains a large amount of Vitamin B12. Spirulina is very rich in iron, which is the most common mineral deficiency. Spirulina also contains calcium, magnesium, and vitamins A, B, C, D and E.

In ancient times, moringa was known and used in traditional societies around the world. Obviously, this was long before people had the tools of instant communication. Moringa was considered a universal elixir in that it has been used to treat almost every health issue. This knowledge existed in many different parts of the world—Africa, Central and South America, and many parts of South Asia.

Today, scientists have been investigating the traditional claims about moringa. Scientists have done various studies where they examined the nutritional value of the moringa leaves. In a gram-for-gram comparison of nutritional data, it has been found that moringa leaves have:
- seven times the vitamin C of oranges;
– four times the vitamin A of carrots;
– four times the calcium of milk;
– three times the potassium of bananas, and;
– two times the protein of yogurt.

Putting moringa leaves in your juices and foods is nature’s way of providing copious amounts of vitamins and minerals through living whole foods. Since Phuket Cleanse is not just a cleansing program, but a fitness program, our cleansers are always concerned about getting enough protein through our vegan super juices and foods. The great news is that moringa leaves contain all of the essential amino acids, which are the building blocks of proteins. It is very rare for a vegetable to contain all of these amino acids that qualify it as a complete, quality protein. Phuket Cleanse uses fresh moringa in our super green juices and salads. We also put dried moringa leaves in our dishes for extra supplementation. We use fresh moringa due to its abundance of life force since it can be picked fresh daily. However, when you return home to a climate where moringa does not grow fresh, we encourage you to continue to supplement with moringa powder or capsules. The good news is that dried moringa is more concentrated in vitamins than the fresh moringa. Except for vitamin C, very little nutritional value is lost in the drying process. This is important because dried leaves can be stored for use much longer than fresh leaves, leaving you a supply available year-round. Drying the leaves condenses the nutrients, so that a large dose of nutrition can be gained from a small spoonful of dried moringa leaf powder.
